What to do if your startup is being screwed by the acquirer?

3

I sold a popular site on Flippa and the new owner has completely screwed the site up by splattering it with ads everywhere.

I used to be proud of saying I founded that site and now I'm ashamed to tell anyone or even list it on my resume.

The acquirer ended up redesigning the site by hiring someone on 99Designs (it's a crappy design compared to the pixel perfect UX I had earlier).

Not sure this question can even be answered, but just felt like asking someone. It's like watching Miley Cyrus from years ago vs. now. Torture!

As you know, once it's sold it's completely out of your control. I have had designs butchered long after my involvement. Fortunately, I can choose which images go in my portfolio :)

I think this might be easier to answer if you look at your goals.

  • If you're using the site as part of a portfolio then you can show pictures of the design you actually did for it. It doesn't really matter what it looks like now.
  • If you want to use the site on your resume as a testament to your abilities to start and run a profitable company then highlight your sales figures, accomplishments and what you were able to sell the company for.
  • If you're just talking to friends and new acquaintances then you get to let them know you sold it.
