How to work online with employees staying outstation?

0

I run a small travel startup based in a remote town where it is hard to find skilled personnel or to get people to shift here. For this reason, I am planning to hire someone in a nearby town/city where it will be easy to find skilled individuals. As most of the work of our business takes place online, this looks certainly possible.

My question is, are there softwares (applications) out there, preferably free, which can help me in communicating with the employees and sharing documents/databases with them online. I am sorry if I may sound vague, but I hope you understand my questions. As in tools which help startups in remote organizational networking/communicating/management.

I have worked with some people online myself. Here are a few things I may suggest that could assist you. They work well for me but that does not mean they will work well for everybody.

Communication (Video Chat, Voice Calls, SMS)

- Skype [FREE but you can upgrade for better features]

Organization/Project Management - Campfire [PAID but very thorough and it may be something you would be interested in]

- Freedcamp [FREE but you can purchase add-ons and better features]

File Sharing/Shared Documents - Google Drive [FREE but can upgrade for more storage. You start with around 10 GB of storage free]

  • Thanks for sharing these tools. I have been doing some research in lately and hence replied today. Even I have something of the same sorts in mind though I am still to figure out the softwares. I was thinking SkyDrive rather GDrive as it has been something I am using personally and am comfortable with. Many project management tools out there. I also like Brightpod, Trello, Basecamp and Dovico. I will have to sit and compare their features before choosing one. I will certainly go for something very user friendly. Any ideas? – Vaivhav 10 years ago

Another option could be something like Dropbox. Like one aspect of the Google Drive stuff, this would allow you to share files in their existing formats from a file on each of your desktops.

  • What do you think about Skydrive. I have been using it personally and like it? How is it for business work? – Vaivhav 10 years ago

I have settled to use the following:

TeamBox for project management (awesome price for small groups)
Skype
Box.net for file sharing (best price and great features)
