Accepted Answers: the case for it and against it

3

Setting an accepted answer didn't make it into the launch release because we need the community's opinion. Here are the pros and cons:

Pros:

  • Signals that the asker got a satisfactory answer.
  • Pushes the accepted answer at the top.

Cons:

  • Many times the accepted answer isn't what the community at large views as the top answer. For example: On Stackoverflow, many times the second answer (after the accepted one) has far more votes signaling that it worked for far more people.
  • Once an answer is accepted, it might be a deterrent for other experts to add in their knowledge.
  • Added complexity in the UX.

TL;DR Accepted answers might only make sense for a site like Stackoverflow where a single answer solves the problem.

  • This brings up the question of what the goal of this site is. If it is intended to be a Q&A site for people trying to build successful startups, having an accepted answer only seems appropriate. If it is more of a forum than a Q&A site, then it can probably be left out. (There are also lots of sites out there that allow you to choose between the two, and questions will have an accepted answer, while non-questions do not.) I think if you can answer the question of whether this is intended to be a Q&A site or not, you'll have your answer. – rbwhitaker 10 years ago
  • There is a middle ground. Have accepted answers, but sort them by the votes as normal. So the accepted answer will still show up in order of the amount of votes it got. That way we get the best of both worlds. – Tim 10 years ago
  • Tim has a great point. I wish I could upvote comments. I'll go add that to the list if it isn't already. – rbwhitaker 10 years ago
  • Looks like Tim beat me to it! – rbwhitaker 10 years ago
  • @rb @tim -- We're definitely a Q&A site, so having accepted answers now does make sense in that context. Tim's idea of keeping the sort order to strictly "by votes" is great. Planned! We'll port in the accepted answers data from for the old questions from SE. – Nishank Khanna 10 years ago
