Add formatting options when asking questions.

1

When you answer a question or post an item on the roadmap, you have a collection of formatting options at the top (bold, italic, bullets, links, etc.). When you ask a question, it doesn't look like those options are there. Can we get them added? They're probably just as valuable to the askers as the answerers.

  • @RB, we A/B split tested this and it turned out removing the formatting options resulted in over 28% more conversions. I guess this is why Quora decided to do it in a similar manner -- provide formatting options on the "edit question" page. A little unknown hack is to go directly to http://www.brightjourney.com/q/new to get the full editor for posting a question. From initial tests people don't seem to mind editing a question to get the formatting -- and while the sample size is small, they seem to end up adding more details while editing. – Nishank Khanna 10 years ago
  • We should definitely split test this again later as the community grows. On a side note, the test also included different colors for the ask button -- orange worked the best. – Nishank Khanna 10 years ago
  • Ah. I see. The A/B split testing would explain why I thought I remembered seeing this at some point. I'm actually really surprised to hear that there's such a big difference. It doesn't strike me as being excessively complicated. Any theories on why the formatting options seem to be such a turnoff for people? – rbwhitaker 10 years ago
  • I think it's because visually the extra options made it feel like a lot of work will be needed to ask a question. The result was indeed surprising. – Nishank Khanna 10 years ago
  • I do like how clean the version with no formatting options is. So perhaps it's for the best. It's cool to see you guys are doing A/B testing. Looks like you're doing things right! – rbwhitaker 10 years ago
