Idea: 3d printing server for Kickstarter campaigns to create their prototypes?

2

What are your thoughts on this idea:

People who create Kickstarter campaigns sometimes need a dummy prototype (looks like the final product, but isn't functional).

Would there be a market for this? I am capable to creating the 3D model and have a decent 3D printer to make the end result.

I definitely think there's potential for this, though (a) you don't necessarily need to limit yourself to just Kickstarter (or crowdfunding) prototyping, and (b) your competition probably isn't going to limit themselves to this either. Take, for instance, Shapeways, which has already built a name for themselves in the custom 3D printing market.

But really, you're asking the wrong people here. You need to try to connect with your potential market instead. What I'd recommend is that you do something like this:

  1. Go find a good domain name for what you want to buy. Perhaps something like kickstarterprototypes.com or something. (I have no clue if that's already taken, though if it is, there's yet another member of your competition.)
  2. Build a simple landing page that describes your idea, tell people you're close to launching (it sounds like it wouldn't take a whole lot to get going) and ask them to give you their email address if they're interested.
  3. Spend $50 or $100 to buy Google AdWords for this area.
  4. Watch the traffic for a few weeks or a month and see how many signups you get.

It's hard to say how many signups you'd need, but you know the numbers you'd need for your business to get off the ground, and can probably come up with it.

If $100 and a month of the landing page only gives you two or three signups, it's probably not going to work. If $100 and a month gets you thousands of signups, you've probably hit on something.
